How to Help a Person with Dementia Sleep Better at Home

When managing sleep difficulties in dementia, adjusting daily routines is often more helpful than medication at first.

Start with daytime light exposure. Morning sunlight sends a strong signal to the brain that it is daytime, which helps the body prepare for sleep later. Open curtains early and keep the home bright during the day. A short walk outside can be very beneficial.

Encourage gentle daytime activity such as light household tasks, conversation, music, or simple exercises. Try to reduce long naps in the late afternoon, as too much daytime sleep can make night-time sleep more difficult.

In the evening, gradually create a calm environment. Dim the lights, reduce noise and stimulation, and follow the same bedtime routine each night for example: washing, using the toilet, a warm drink, then bed. Repeating this pattern helps the body recognise that it is time to sleep.

At night, complete darkness can sometimes increase fear. A small night light can provide reassurance. Make sure the path to the toilet is clear and safe to prevent falls.

Avoid caffeine in the evening, heavy late meals, and large amounts of fluids just before bed, as these can lead to night-time waking.

Most importantly, if the person wakes during the night, respond calmly and gently. Reassurance works better than correction. Anxiety makes sleep worse, while a calm approach can help them settle again.

Sleep problems usually improve gradually, not overnight. Consistent daily routines and a calm environment make the biggest difference.
